A couple weeks ago our lives were disrupted in the most hideous way. A couple guys attempted to break into our house while we were here. It was a scary and frightening ordeal. And I have had a lot of sleepless nights since then. And probably will for a long, long time. We were sitting watching tv around 11:15 pm, when someone started banging at our front door. A male voice shouted, “You are fgking like everyone else and won’t help me.” What did he think we were going to do- open the door that late at night to a stranger? We heard hushed whispers between two men. Sounded like they were walking away. Then suddenly there was yelling and screaming. They started banging on the front door again. Told me to open it. I told my husband to call 911. We are senior citizens and the episode frightened us to our core. The yelling and banging got more intense. Sounded like one of them was throwing his upper body against the door. Then when it wouldn’t budge sounded like he kicked it. Told us to open the door because he was coming in whether we wanted him to or not. Kept banging on door demanding we open it. Then splintered the wood, cracking it open enough to see light from outside. Shouted he was coming in and if we didn't open the door he was going to break the windows. Heard the glass shatter. Got more upset. They were that much closer to having their way with us, inside our humble home. Husband talked to the dispatcher on phone. Police finally came and caught these guys red handed. They arrested one. He was high on drugs. And the other guy, they let go because he was supposedly trying to get him help. But that brought no comfort to us. These two effectively held us hostage in our home for 15 to 20 minutes. It was terrifying and we are lucky they didn’t get in. God only knows what would have happened. We were at their mercy. Meanwhile we have to replace the damaged door at a cost that is ridiculously high according to the several estimates we’ve had. And to boot insurance has a $500 deductible so that doesn’t help. And in the meantime we have to live with the broken door until we can replace it. In all thirty one years of living here nothing like this has ever happened before and I pray it never does again. I’m not sure I will ever be able to get over this happening to us.
