PRICES FROM THE PAST, TODAY!

When it comes to groceries… my husband and I disagree on where to shop for them. Our choices are limited. We have four places available to us. I tend to shop at a place called Meijers. My husband prefers Walmart. Until recently I didn’t understand his obsession for the huge box store. Now I do. I shop at Meijers because I like the atmosphere and the ethnic food readily available... not to mention their other products. With my husband it’s strictly about money. We use 2% milk, and at the store I favor… it costs approximately $2 for a half a gallon. At Walmart my husband pays a mere fifty-seven cents for that milk. A dozen jumbo eggs at Walmart costs only forty cents. At Meijers… again, it’s closer to $2. A bag of ready made salad costs $1.42 at Walmart, but at Meijers costs approximately $3. As much as I love the store I frequent, who can argue with prices reminiscent of a bygone era offered by Walmart.  They certainly have my attention now that we’re exclusively on Social Security. But I’m eyeing Aldi’s too. Atmosphere and availability are no longer my only criteria. COST is priority number one.

If you shop at WM and save loads of money, you can take a leisurely cruise through the store you like, soak up their atmosphere, and still be able to afford one foreign food. You will both be happy and save money.

You can't beat WalMart and their prices. Every penny does make a difference.

I like to vary the stores I go to from one week to another. I really shop the ads more than not. Walmart is ok for somethings, but I only go there once a month. I really don't find their prices a whole lot cheaper and it's not as close by to me as the others.

I have to admit, I love saving money on groceries and clothes. I will use coupons when I have them. We go to Meijer for our free cholesterol meds. I will buy coffee if it's on sale there. Ted loved peanuts and they sell very cheep there compared to our local grocery. I do shop Walmart for things too. But I shop our local store rather than drive to the next town for Meijer or Walmart. Our grocery at time has 10 for $10. Or buy one get one free. That is good. Wishing you the best savings, Bless you, xoxo, Susie

I can really understand why you want to look around and find a good, affordable store for groceries. I have been thinking about this a lot lately. Groceries are so expensive, and the main store is not cutting it for me anymore, so I have wandered into Sprouts and enjoy the atmosphere and the prices. For the toiletries and dish soaps, etc., I shop elsewhere. I'm glad Walmart suits you, Taryterre.

Isn't milk getting to be ridiculously expensive?

Wow, your Walmart is a lot less expensive than the one I go to here in TN.

Unfortunately I only have two places to choose from in this small town - Walmart and the supermarket called Save-a-Lot. Save-a-Lot is okay, but it's not quite as cheap as everyone thinks. And they only sell their own brand of food.

We don't have Walmart, but I try to shop price, too. I needed Vaseline today and it was $4.29 at the "discount" drugstore. Eeks! I decided to try the branch of Bed, Bath and Beyond that opened around the corner from me. It was $2.49 and the actual brand. I will definitely start here for drug items next time I need something.

I'm so spoiled by our Kroger supermarket right around the corner ... but like y'all we're soon going to be Social Security exclusive; unable to splurge regularly. These prices you cite aren't anything to sneeze at!

You should definitely give Aldi a try. They're even cheaper than Wal-Mart, and they have really good stuff. This time of year they have a lot of unique Christmas goodies.

We shop Walmart but they are more expensive then yours. I really like Lowes the next town over because they play country music and make me want to dance. Just kidding.

We got a call from Ypsilanti the other day from Sherry's Brother. He was relating the price of milk and eggs. Not so here in any store. LOL
We shop where the over average is good. We do like Aldi's.

I dislike the whole shopping process, period. :-/ I prefer to shop at our locally owned mom & pop grocery store because it's nice & small. Our local Meijers and Walmart both feel like airport hangars, they're so big. I like our Aldi's because it's nice & small like the mom & pop store... and the prices are great. But it's the shopping process that I loathe and our Walmart doesn't have the "order online & pick it up" service. I wish they did. xoxo

Hi Taryterre....Yes, getting the most for our money is very important in all stages of life, but especially as seniors. I like to zip into Aldi's now and again for certain products. Thanks for all your sweet visits. By the way, we don't eat the gingerbread houses----too much sugar. The kids nibble the goodies while they are putting them together. Then, at the end of the Christmas season, we set them outside for the birds and squirrels. Don't know if they go to the dentist of now. ha ha Have a great day. Susan

Yes, I've been listening to Christmas music in my car a lot lately. It started right after Thanksgiving. All the old tunes really get me in the Christmas spirit. Have a good rest of the week, Taryterre. : )

Knowing that a lot of dairy farmers are losing money -- I don't quibble about the price of milk.
