OLDER THAN DIRT

I will be spending a quiet
weekend at home.
No dinners out, even though
the local restaurants have re-opened.
I don't want to take any chances.
I'm immune compromised
and in the 'at risk' category,
so is my hubby.
So instead, we ordered
steamed crabs from
the Eastern Shore
that will be flown in.
We're giving my daughter
and grandchildren,
some to take home
and enjoy too.

And, while eating
these delicacies...
my hubby and I
will drink a
couple specialty beers
to honor my big day,
and my interest
in the History Channel
tv show
Ancient Aliens.
Truth is folks,
when you eat crabs
you have to drink beer.
They go hand in hand.

Afterwards -
I will blow out
the candles.
There are quite a few
this year.
And we will EAT cake.
The kind with lots of thick
buttercream frosting.

Also we will be
watching to see
if we have liftoff
of SpaceX Dragon.

Otherwise...
keeping it low key.
 Should be fun.

(PS)
You know you're getting old
when your clothes
don't match.
 The above picture
proves
I'm older than dirt.

Memorial Day Birthday

"Memorial Day
honors those who have died
while in military service.
The first national celebration
of Memorial Day
(originally Decoration Day)
took place
May 30, 1868
at Arlington National Cemetery."
Therefore, my birthday
always fell on the holiday
when I was growing up.
I was a May 30th,
All American,
Gemini Gal...
I couldn't celebrate without
the Red, White and Blue
colors dotting the landscape
and my clothing...
as I danced among the graves,
of loved ones that had passed...
while laying flowers and wreathes
at their head and feet.
"But in 1968
Congress passed the
Uniform Monday Holiday Act,
which established Memorial Day
as the last Monday in May,
in order to create
a three-day weekend
for federal employees;
the change went into effect in 1971."
So my birthday no longer
was celebrated on Memorial Day.
It was a hard pill to swallow
because they had always gone
hand in hand
and then suddenly, they didn't.

 PLEASE
set aside time
to pause and remember

"The brave die never,
 though they sleep in dust:
Their courage nerves
a thousand living men."
"With the tears a Land hath shed.
Their graves should ever be green."

Rushing Forward

Perhaps...
 instead of Rushing Forward,
We should stand our ground.
Hold Back
and shelter in place,
just a little bit longer...
As the race to find a cure
for Covid19 goes forward,
the current attitude of many
in this country
is more people will ultimately die,
because of the virus, but so be it.
They are collateral damage.
We don't need more testing.
They must be sacrificed for the greater good.
Reopening the economy is more important
in their opinion, than an
infected or dying person...
The unemployed are suffering, no doubt.
But there are many
creative ways
one can find to make a buck,
in times like this.
And all hope is not gone for them..
They still have their lives.
Protests in the streets with people
carrying nooses, guns and swastikas
demanding we capitulate and
REOPEN NOW
or else...
is NOT who Americans are.
Or is it?
I am saddened by the flames of hatred,
name calling
and partisan divide being stoked
at the highest levels of our government
and in the public at large
during this health crisis...
There is no empathy, no compassion.
But...
I am heartened by those out there -
 the everyday heroes,
in grocery stores, working at carry-outs,
in the post office and hospitals, etc
who have made a difference
in each and every one of our lives,
by being there…
as this pandemic rages on,
and the death totals rise.
They give us hope that humanity is worth
our sacrifices during this difficult time
and that EVERY life matters
not just certain ones....
because of age, race, religion
or political affiliation.
Across the globe, people stayed home
for the greater good of their country.
They social distanced to curb the spread.
Only here in America
did people get bored with
the status quo of
staying home to keep safe
and keep others out of harm’s way too.
Instead they got riled up by Twitter
and misguided information
by self serving people, not heeding
science and doctors.
As a result, people
have decided ME is more important
than the collective WE...
we began to embrace as a society.
Instead
people are rushing to get
back to their lives,
to have pedicures, haircuts and the like,
 with callous disregard
to the population
as a whole.
COVID19 is a KILLER.
This is NOT the flu.
It is DEADLY
and affects each of us differently.
You may be fine one day, and dead the next.
In past wars that lasted far longer
than a couple months…
 Americans understood
we are
ALL in this TOGETHER.
Letting sick people just die
or letting healthy ones get infected, just
because we want to selfishly
go to the beach, mall or wherever…
should NEVER be part of the equation.
I pray for America.
It seems to me...
we have
lost our way,
save for a few good souls
who have our backs.

God Bless them. Every single one.

ps) this post is not intended to be political. instead i'm just stating my observations.

Kentucky Derby & My Dad (updated from weekend) NEW LINK included

My grandpa back in the day used to play the ponies. I remember him well. He always had a racing form in his hand and a pencil tucked by his ear waiting to fill it out. I grew up watching The Kentucky Derby and Preakness. Every year my DAD and I would watch, even from a distance... after I grew up, and we'd talk about our picks, either before or after the race. Whether I'm there in Kentucky or not, I don a fancy hat and celebrate with special foods and drinks. But because of Covid19... the Kentucky Derby was canceled, until September. It normally would have run on Saturday May 2nd. Last year, my mom and I talked about the race, after it aired. We both were missing dad who had passed away, the month before. There was a big void in my heart this year, since the race was canceled, for this past weekend... which coincided with the day my dad was interned in 2019. My mom went out to the cemetery (it’s closed cause of virus) to sit by the gates... to be with my dad, from a distance. And, I sat here in my kitchen, halfway across the country... and hoisted a drink or two, in his honor... and The Derby’s, feeling no pain. I think my dad and grandpa would have approved.

NO HAT THIS YEAR, MAYBE NEXT.

😊
ps) the parody i originally put up for you all to look at
on Saturday was from You Tube.
they asked where i'd like to copy it to...
i pressed the Blogger logo and it appeared on my blog.
 apparently it was copyrighted
and then wouldn't permit my readers to see it.
i'm attaching a link to it instead so
hopefully you'll get to see it afterall.
I originally gave kudos to the person who made it
so i don't know what the big deal was?

GOODBYE APRIL

HAPPY MAY DAY
to all my blog buddies,
friends and family.
ENJOY
even though we must
incorporate this new normal
into how we celebrate.
