This has
been a pretty mild winter until now. We got a couple inches of snow overnight.
And then freezing rain and sleet on top of it. Made the roads slick and tricky
to navigate this morning. And then, by afternoon, everything melted. And the
temperature climbed up to 42 degrees. As
evening approached however, the temps
began to tumble, and the wind picked up. It was fierce outside. According to
the local news, it’s going down to 10 to 12 degrees overnight, with wind gusts of 50 mph, and
wind chills making it feel closer to
zero tonight. No precipitation is expected. So… we can be grateful for small favors. I
think we’re going to sleep in. Comfy, cozy under the covers with our electric
blanket on high. Our arthritis and my neuropathy are worse in the cold weather. So we want to nestle in bed as long as possible, where it is warm. My
partner likes to turn the thermostat down to an inhumane 62 degrees. Exiting
the bed each morning is a shock to the system. And tomorrow the temps are not
expected to go up much. So walking around the house all day is going to be very
chilly, indeed. He’ll be wearing his flannel shirt and I’ll double down with a
couple sweaters. Later, we’ll be making some oatmeal with apple chunks and
cranberries for brunch. And then have to decide... if we want coffee, tea or hot
chocolate. I think I’ll go for the cinnamon tea and my hubby will probably have
coffee. Nothing more comforting than wrapping your cold fingers around a piping
hot cup of your favorite beverage. It’s comfort in a cup. Then we’ll spend the
rest of the day lounging around, online… or watching a movie on TV. No heavy duty chores. So wherever you are, if this latest frigid
cold streak hits your area... take advantage of indoor activities. And if you
must venture outside, be sure to bundle up, like you did when you were a little kid. ‘Cause baby it’s cold out there. Very, very cold. Stay safe.
PS) The jpg I’m
using at the beginning of my post, is a painting from artist Mervin Jules. It is my favorite piece of
artwork ever. When I first saw it many years ago, I got shivers running up and
down my spine. I saw myself in the young girl featured in it. I swear it is me
standing there, all alone, as the wind whips through my hair on a brutally cold
winter night, far, far away.
PPS) At the end of the post, is my mother and I, once upon a time.

We also got some snow overnight here in NH and this morning the sun is trying to poke through. Your advice to stay inside and stay warm is just what we are doing today. My husband also prefers to lower the heat overnight and also to crack open a window so glad we have flannel sheets and a warm comforter as well. I appreciated your comment on my recent blog post about the school that expelled a student. Thanks for expressing your opinion which is similar to my own.
I like that painting! I can imagine the person's feelings of being in weather like that since I've been in weather like that and you are currently in weather like that! 62 degrees inside! That is very cold!! We keep it at 69 and a lot of times I'm bundled under several blankets and I too use a hot drink to warm my hands and my body. You are doing the best things you can for weather like this! Hopefully it won't last too long and spring is coming so very soon!! About 2 months away now but each day brings it closer! That's my mantra though our temps are not as cool as yours but still lower than we Phoenicians are used to. Supposed to be 77 degrees here today and I'm taking it!

i remember winters like the one in the painting. i loved them. we have been so mild here this winter, it's very disappointing. at least right now we have some nice flurries. i keep my thermostat at 54 all winter long. i can't stand a warm house.
OK, you've convinced me! :)I'd fully intended to get up, dressed and out the door to church services … but just wasn't feeling it. We're certainly not as cold as you. Nevertheless, I can't escape the lure of wrapping my fingers around a hot cup and lounging the afternoon away under a big old fleece wrap.
Love this photo of you and your beautiful mother!
PS - Wowza on your temps - both outside and indoors. I claim to love cold, wintry weather but that which you're experiencing? Yikes!
I enjoyed the description of your cold winter day - - staying indoors and keeping cozy is the very best thing to do. It's ironic that you mentioned oatmeal with apples, because that's exactly what I'm planning to have today.
Our unseasonably warm weather only lasted a week. The cold front came last night and now it's freezing. And naturally I'm having trouble with my furnace. Fortunately I have several space heaters.
I love the painting on your post and the photo of you and your Mom. Stay warm and enjoy your tea.
That is cold - 62 degrees - won't your pipes freeze? lol
I keep mine at 67 degrees and I think that is cold.
Stay warm and drink a lot of hot liquids.

Tommy keeps his house, where I am now, at 64 degrees. I wear a short summer gown and go barefoot. I hate a cold house. However, at the moment, I have gotten a little cool. I hate hot drinks, so all my drinks will be cold with ice this winter. I drink hot chocolate about once a month because it is chocolate. Then, I have to drink ice water after the hot chocolate...lol. Keep warm.
It's really cold here too and we to the same snow covered with freezing rain, ice and winds to blow it all around. Finally calming down this morning. but so cold it makes you shiver. My house is warm since I have to keep it that way so my pipes don't freeze. Layers are the best thing to wear. Just like have insulation. Keep safe and keep warm!
I am late, BUT what a great CHILLY post. Y'all left the door open because it made it all the way down to Florida.... We were in the 50s this AM. Yeah I know for you guys that ain't cold, but to mama here it is. LOL
Loved the entry and could not imagine the CCCCOLD with high winds. Yep keep that blanket on high and stay warm.
Sending warm thoughts your way. Love the family picture, you were cute and warm and your mother was beautiful! Love it!~

Love the picture of you and your mother. We had snow on Saturday, but blessedly forty degrees yesterday and barely a scrap remains. One of my favorite moment of every day in my first cup of coffee. I've been using my Buttercup mug -- again, thanks -- and thinking of you.
Oh, it sure is cold where you live, Taryterre. Staying inside with blankets and eating warm oatmeal is good. 62 degrees is what the temperature is when I turn the heater up. You're right, hot coffee or tea is like comfort in a cup. What a great way to describe it. I love that painting of the girl shivering in the cold, and the photo of you and your Mother when you were a baby is a treasure. So sorry to hear your arthritis acts up in the cold. I have a few dear ones with the same thing. Wow, 10-12 degrees - bundle up and stay warm, Taryterre.

Dear Taryterre....It's been pretty bitterly cold here, too. Yowsers. But it's supposed to warm up this weekend. Your day inside sounds warm and cozy and the electric blanket at night is equally warming. You've found how to stay comfortable. Susan
What a comfy post! 😊
