My grandpa back in the day used to play the ponies. I remember
him well. He always had a racing form in his hand and a pencil tucked by his
ear waiting to fill it out. I grew up watching The Kentucky
Derby and
Preakness. Every year my DAD and I would watch, even from a distance... after I grew up, and we'd talk about our picks, either before or after the race. Whether I'm there in Kentucky or not, I don a fancy hat and celebrate with special foods
and drinks. But because of Covid19... the Kentucky
Derby was
canceled, until September. It normally would have run on Saturday May 2nd. Last year, my mom and I talked about the
race, after it aired. We both were missing dad who had passed away, the month before. There was a big void in my heart this year, since the race was canceled, for this past weekend... which coincided with the day my dad was interned in 2019. My mom went out to the cemetery (it’s closed cause of virus) to sit by the gates... to be with my
dad, from a distance. And, I sat here in my kitchen, halfway across the country... and hoisted a drink or two, in his honor... and The Derby’s, feeling no pain. I think my dad and grandpa would have approved.
NO HAT THIS YEAR, MAYBE NEXT.
😊
ps) the parody i originally put up for you all to look at
on Saturday was from You Tube.
they asked where i'd like to copy it to...
i pressed the Blogger logo and it appeared on my blog.
apparently it was copyrighted
and then wouldn't permit my readers to see it.
i'm attaching a link to it instead so
hopefully you'll get to see it afterall.
I originally gave kudos to the person who made it
so i don't know what the big deal was?

Ha! This is so great. Thanks for lightening my day. :)
Thanks for the entertainment and stories of dad. There are things that bring them back REAL. The race callers always amaze me how they can call all the names (fake or not) so fast and accurate.
Anyway, though a sad note rang, it was still a good entry. So thanks again and lift one for dad! You stay safe!
Your mama is sweet in her thoughts. NICE!

Nice your have all those memories! Say - have you lost a lot of weight there? I am so jealous.
It is absolutely heartbreaking to know that the cemetery is closed and your mother is restrained from visiting your father's grave.
You should definitely "hoist a drink" to the memory of your Dad and grandfather...and the Derby. My thoughts are with you.
Unfortunately, when I tried to watch the video I got a message that it was removed for copyright violations (so typical of YouTube).
I read somewhere it was postponed to sometime in September so maybe then you can get out your hat! Anyway it's a good memory for you of good times with your dad. Cherish the memories.
Thanks for the new link - - it worked!
It's a shame that the Derby is postponed until Sept but it's something we can look forward to.
I came back. It worked for me the first time thru, but it was just as much fun the second time. LOL The announcer(s) still amaze me. LOL
I was backing Cabin Fevor...I've got it bad. Hope to get out and win a race of my own today. Going around the back. Hang in there !
I went back and watched it - it would be funny if it weren't so sad! lol
I'm glad you celebrated The Derby, even if it was just by yourself with a drink or two. I remember Nel one year watched it on tv and even dressed up with a fancy hat. It was a lot of fun for her and husband. What special memories of you and your Dad watching the Derby every year. That is something you will always share together. : )
