MINI-VAN, MUSIC AND LIFE

About three years ago, I made a rash decision, to trade in my newer Toyota, for an older Mini Van. The car salesman thought I was crazy. I wanted a more roomier vehicle than I had and this was the tradeoff. It was an even trade. It’s been a workhorse taking us through the mountains of West Virginia and Pennsylvania. And the wide open spaces of Indiana and Ohio. I like the van because the outside is the color of pumpkins, orange. And the inside is black, for a combination, that makes me think of Halloween, everyday, instead of once a year. On the downside, it has higher mileage than I would like. And it’s becoming increasingly difficult to climb up into. The other problem with it is, the radio/cd-player stopped working, about a year after I got it. That means I’ve been driving it for two years without any music. That depresses me. I love music. When I told my hubby it was broken, he said he’d take a look. He did and tried to solder a board inside the radio, after he had taken it apart, and saw a connection was broken. I was excited because that fixed it. So for a week or two, I got to listen to music. Unfortunately, it was only temporary and the radio stopped working, again. We investigated replacing it. A factory model was over $500 bucks with installation. That was too much. So, then we looked at after market brands. They were about half the cost, but were so complicated, I couldn’t figure out how to operate them. The junkyard also didn’t yield any results. And ultimately, that meant I had no radio/cd-player. And no music in the van. It’s been a sore spot for me, but I’ve dealt with it. Today, to add insult to injury… the damn battery, died. It’s seven years old, the original one, so it needs replacing. But jump starting it doesn’t work. That means we have to call a tow truck, (more money)…  to get it towed to Walmart. We’re both running fevers. Spent Valentines Day eating frozen entrees. Today, when my husband went outside, to deal with the whole van situation… he fell, stepping off the porch. Blood everywhere. He hurt his knee, leg, and hand. Not sure if anything is broken. He refuses to go to the hospital. Neither one of us can walk very well anyway, so this just adds to our problems. He’s 81. He’s tired and fed up. I’m frustrated too. Maybe… when the new battery is installed, the radio will begin working? You never know. “Life isn’t always easy, but life is good.” It’s the only way to look at things, isn’t it? Because it could always be worse.

Ughhhh … I'm so sorry to hear this! Does your Wal-Mart offer a home delivery service -- or would Uber deliver a new battery and y'all could replace it yourselves? Actually, I'm impressed yours lasted 7 years. While in Arizona, the longest we went between changes was 18 months; I guess on account of the extreme temps.
Lifting prayers that hubby heals and you both get to feeling much better soon!

I am sorry to read your husband fell. It's too dangerous to be out in slick conditions. Wish I could help you guys. Please keep an eye on your hubby. Men almost have to be dragged to the dr. I will pray for you both. That's what we all can do for one another. Maybe enough prayers will be of help. Bless you both, xoxo, Susie

I'm so sorry your husband took a fall, Taryterre. I can totally relate to you being frustrated without music in the van. I love music too, and sometimes that's the only time I get to hear music is when I drive around running errands or taking long drives in the country. Music really uplifts us, and I hope you get the radio fixed soon. Sometimes frozen dinners are Yummy. But I'm sorry you are both sick with fevers. There's viruses going around right now, and it's awful. Grandbabies were both sick recently. Feel better, Taryterre. You mean a lot to me, ya know?

Well, I would certainly be attracted to an orange van, since I love pumpkins and Halloween. It's a shame that the radio no longer works. Possibly the new battery will revive it - but I'm not sure. I'm really surprised the battery lasted seven years. I think my most recent one only lasted five.

I'm so sorry to hear about your husband's fall.Hopefully he's not seriously hurt. I don't blame him for not wanting to go to the hospital - but if things don't improve he should probably get checked by a doctor.

I completely destroyed my back/spine by falling. Years ago I fell down the stairs and seriously injured my spine. Here in TN I fell on the ice and re-injured the old injury. As a result I'm nearly crippled.
Please take care and hang in there. My very best to your husband.

Ahhhh sorry to hear of the music problems. I know people who hear thrive on music. But the other is terrible. AT 81 can relate to the disappointments of health, balance and frustrations of not being able to get everything working.
AND YES it is possible the radio will work with the new battery, I hope so. Also hope hubby doesn't have anything broken.
Love you guys,
Sherry & jack
PS: I smiled seeing an alert of a new post from TT

I'm so sorry to hear all of this. I hope you're both on the good side of recovery and your husband's fall was just a "bad bang" as my mother used to say. Sending healing thoughts across the miles.

Hope there are no serious injuries with your hubby’s fall. When it rains it pours... hope you are both better soon and the car up and running, hopefully with a radio that springs back to life.
Take care, Sheila

At first, I was sorry to read about all the issues with the mini van, but then these became minor when I read that your husband had fallen. I hope his injuries are not serious as we all fear falling when we age, myself included. Hope the colds will be going soon as well.

Sorry about the music problem. Can you carry a boombox? My two-day-old car hit a monster pothole and killed all the electrical stuff in a car with less than 100 miles on it. I resorted to carrying a radio for the trip back to another state. Never step off the porch. Go down steps and hold on to railing! I am very cautious walking and fall down anyway! Hope things get better for you two.

See if there is a vehicle customization shop near you, they have many more options of radios and will do the installation for you. We are about to replace the no longer working radio from our 16 year old vehicle and they had a ton of choices. We found a simple option for $80 and it's going to be a $20 charge to install it. Our shop does tinting, radios, bumper guards, etc.
