Getting Old & Fumble Fingers

Getting older is a chore. Everything hurts, nothing works. It’s frustrating. The high point of my life these days is going to the grocery store. Because of Covid my hubby still REFUSES to travel. And we go little if anywhere. Climbing up into my van is difficult, at best, but I manage to go it alone sometimes. And escaping the daily monotony is a thrill. I’m vaccinated. No worries. So... I travel a couple miles up the road, to the supermarket and find a parking place. I wobble to where the scooters are inside and get on board one, with a charge. Then the fun begins as I navigate my way around the store finding what I need. It brings me joy to be getting out of the house and seeing what new items are lurking on the shelves.  When I’m done picking and choosing what’s what, I check out. I then load the van up with my haul and  head back home. There, you know the drill. I have to unpack it all and put it away inside. Well the last time I did this, I had fumble fingers. Because I have neuropathy in my hands, sometimes they don’t work so well. I had reached into the van to grab a bag. I have hooks on back of my seats that hold the bags. They are quite high up. As I pulled the bag off, I realized it was heavier than I anticipated and I accidently dropped it. My fingers just didn't work. SPLAT right on the driveway apron. This was from a height of about 3 to 4ft. I screamed, mad at myself for being so clumsy. When I looked in the plastic bag to see if anything was broken, I suddenly realized there were two cartons of eggs in it. I knew without a doubt they had to be lost, for hard boiling. My husband was going to be disappointed. I managed to get everything else out of the vehicle and inside without further incidence. But I felt stupid for the mishap. There were two cartons of eggs, like I said. Amazingly the one on top received NOT one bit of damage and the eggs were completely intact when I opened the lid. The other one, on the bottom, however, did not fare so well. Shells and yolks were everywhere. When my husband saw the mess he was going to dump the bag and carton into the trash. I screamed no, I could salvage them. I put all the groceries away and then spent the next fifteen minutes picking shells out of the mixture inside the carton. When I was done, I poured some oil into my saucepan on the stove, and added the broken eggs, sans shells. Threw in some Old Bay seasoning, added a touch of milk and some smoked oysters to the mix, beating it up. And made an omelet. No harm done.  A happy ending. “Waste not, want not.”  Have you ever had this happen to you?

Yes, I've had broken eggs before, but don't have your patience to separate the mess of shells and broken eggs. Your omelet sounds very good. I never thought of putting oysters in it before. Something new for me to consider. I have used Old Bay seasoning. It gives seafood a good taste. Hope you enjoyed the eggs. Thankfully not all of them broke.

It is a shame how we fuss at ourselves knowing accidents do happen but we still yell at ourselves. BUT let me tell you we enjoyed the trip with you and ESPECIALLY LOVE THE ENDING. We got a real smile and I sure wanted a bite!

How many did you salvage from the carton of broken eggs? I have never dropped the whole dozen, but I am not ruling that out in the future. At least you could salvage them. Eggs dropped on the floor are just lost unless you have animals who will eat them. I don't.

Amazing that you had one carton of eggs intact after that experience! Yes! Yay for picking out the shells in the other one! I would have loved a taste of your oyster omelet! We are not out often, either, though we are both vaccinated, and we still wear masks when going inside a store. Our state doesn’t have an outstanding percentage regarding vaccinations, sad to say.

I hate to waste food! I might have tried to save them too.

I've done the same thing! Except, the omelet part. I shared mine 'plain jane' with the dogs.
Oh man, I can SO identify with your opening lines. Some days are better than others. But I strongly suspect what I'm experiencing is karma for not being more empathetic to my elders in the past.

Smiling big at the JOY you felt while shopping. I felt that same way last Friday, then another blogger friend (MadSnapper) said the same thing about her recent trip to Publix, sans masks. (Well, I still wear mine. It's becine a comfort thing.)

Accidents will happen and sorry that this one happened to you, but you did make the best out of a bad situation, so kudos to you. Hopefully, in the future your husband will feel comfortable enough to accompany you to the store, but good for you on tackling it yourself. The omelet looks really good too! And yes I have had things happen for example just yesterday when I sprayed air freshener and it squirted upwards on the kitchen ceiling and light fixture.

Don't be so hard on yourself we've all done it in one way or another. A few years ago I forgot to put the ice cream away. It sat out for a few hours until I noticed a dripping bag. It was a sticky mess all over the floor. And a couple months ago I put all the groceries away but forgot the weiners in one bag. Discovered them in the morning. Right into the trash they went. Happens to all of us.

Oh Yes, this has happened to me, especially during this time. I go very early in the morning to avoid the crowd, get all the groceries fast as I can, take them home, and still wash everything off. It's all done pretty fast, so naturally some things fall and break and I get disappointed, like you. But I like the fact that this is a pleasant time for you and you take your time to look around and notice the new foods that are on the shelves. It's all a bit rushed for me, but I still am very grateful that I can get groceries that week. It puts a smile on our faces, doesn't it? You did good scooping up those broken egg, mixing them with a little seasoning, and making an omelet. Great job, Tarterre. Always love your stories.
