HALF A TWENTY

Buried deep inside my purse was a twenty dollar bill with a problem.  Part of it was missing. The bottom half had disappeared. Since this had never happened to me before, I wasn’t sure what to do about it. At first I thought I’d be able to spend it. But nobody would take it. So I decided to take it to the bank to get my spending power back. But the first bank I took it to wouldn’t exchange it for me. They told me I’d need the bottom half to get the 20 bucks. I thought that was ridiculous. They were a bank. Surely that wasn’t true, was it? If I had the bottom half I would just tape it together. They were saying the half of the bill I had was worthless. I couldn’t believe this was happening.  If I had gotten this in change, that meant somebody tried to stiff me. That made me feel like an unknowing dupe. What was I going to do? After careful consideration,  I opted to take  the damaged twenty to another bank.  At the second bank location... they happily took it, and exchanged it for a new crisp twenty. Needless to say... I was ecstatic. I got my buying power back. Has anything like this ever happened to you?

So glad you found a bank that would take care of it. I wonder why the other wouldn't. I've often wondered what would happen. Some bills you get are in very bad shape and should be replaced. Sounds like the new year is off to a good start for you !

It is a mystery how you ended up with the half to start with. I know that must have bugged you. I have never been faced with that dilemma, but since I read this I will remember it. THANKS I too and glad you got the full twenty for it!

I'm glad the second bank was nice about it.

I've never had that happen, but will carefully check my change in the future. Glad the bank was able to replace the twenty.

Glad you got your money for the piece of a twenty. :) I have ripped money that is worn by accident, I try to get that to the bank as soon as possible. LOL. Blessings to you for a happy new year. xoxo, Susie

I didn't know you couldn't cash half a bill either. That's a new one to me. I'm glad you found a bank that would take it and give you the $20. Every bank is different I guess, just like people are different. : )

Great story, Taryterre.

Gosh< there's a lesson for all your readers!
Have to say, I admire you for not 'public-shaming' the first bank. Can't say I'd be as discreet.

Yes - this did happen to me. It was a ten dollar bill, but a little less than half was torn off. And the bank did exchange it for me.

It's annoying to know that someone told you it was worthless. I'm glad there was a happy ending!

Yes that did happen once and the bank exchanged it for a new one. I can't believe the first bank wouldn't...tightwads! Happy New Year to you!!

Banks will usually change them out if no more than a third of it is missing. Glad it worked out for you.

My guess is that they thought you were one of the folks that will get a crisp 20 from them for the 1/2 you have and then go to another bank with the other 1/2 and get a 20 from them...giving you 40 for your 20! HAHA

I'm so glad you got the value of your $20 bill back! I've torn money before but thus always had both halves. I can't say that I've ever had a torn bill with one piece missing. It sounds like a hassle, at any rate. xoxoxo

Happy you did not take the first "no" as the answer!

I have had a half a one dollar bill in the junk drawer for 25 years. No one would give me a whole bill for it. Lucky you. Maybe I will try again.
