STANDING ON MY SOAPBOX

One last story about 2019. When I wrapped and packaged my daughter’s Christmas gifts… it took me a while because I have neuropathy in my hands. I did it with love, hoping a smile would pass her lips, as she opened each one. She is in failing health and is on portable oxygen. I mailed the packages USPS, priority mail. I tracked them across the country all the way to Colorado. It took three days. Problem is… USPS says they were delivered a week and a half, before Christmas. But she never got them. Inside were restaurant gift cards, cash and an Echo Dot with Alexa. I was so-oo aggravated she did not get her presents. I figured I needed to put a trace on them and file a claim to collect the insurance. She was devastated by the loss. And there wasn’t much I could do here. Being on a limited income I couldn’t send her replacements, ‘til we got our next Social Security check, in January. This just ruined all of our Christmas spirit. But as it turns out, management at her apartment complex thought something fishy was going on... when she told them about it. So they enlisted my daughter’s help and ours... to see if they could find those packages. What happened is this. If my daughter gets a package, the mailman is supposed to leave her a key in her mailbox, to a bigger box in the apartment mailroom. He did not do this, in the case of these missing packages. Instead what he did… was leave her packages in a box, with the key still in it, in the mailroom. Which meant anyone had access to them.  Not to mention the fact, it was way across the room… from the box my daughter was supposed to have her packages left in. The apt. managers took my daughter with them to investigate. They were armed with the pictures of both packages, I had sent. They found them in this box with access to everyone, as I previously stated. The Amazon Prime package had been slit open, but appeared to still have the gift inside.. And the other package was intact. So all is well, that ends well. Or so you would think. The apt. managers warned my daughter… that they thought… perhaps the mailman had an accomplice, and that the two of them were up to no good. And they suggested she inform the local post office about what happened and they would too. So that was it, or so we thought. Christmas would be celebrated from afar with the gifts we had sent.Thank goodness. And my daughter could breathe a sigh of relief, at long last, and enjoy her Christmas, though she was alone. Unfortunately something else happened to put a damper on the holiday. The card we sent her separately, from the packages… was from the kitty cats here. In it… we enclosed an Applebee’s gift card. Would you believe it never arrived... and neither did the second card we sent her, for New Years. So, somewhere between here and Colorado, they were both stolen... most likely by my daughter's mail carrier. When I was a young women… starting out… the mail got delivered through rain, snow, sleet and hail. The mail carriers were dedicated to that motto. You could count on them to get the job done. Nowadays... it's a FREE for all. Who deliberately steals from their customers or neighbors… taking what’s not theirs, and pocketing it for themselves. So sad, this is happening more and more with postal carriers around the holidays. If we can’t trust them to deliver the mail, who can we trust? And as for those other porch pirates, that's another story played out on the news, nightly. I don't need to rehash it here. I sincerely hope the new decade... starting with 2020... brings more civility, kindness and honesty into focus... we deserve a better tomorrow for ourselves and our children. And hopefully it starts today, with each one of us making a sincere effort… to really care about each other, whether we know each other, or not. Because what happens on our watch, affects each and everyone of us... We need to set better examples for the children. No more bullying and name calling. No more stealing. The truth must prevail. And the disinformation thats being shoved down our throats daily, must be thwarted. We have eyes and ears... and know deep in our hearts, the difference between right and wrong. It's time to hold the liars and cheats accountable for their actions. And let the rest of us breathe easier. I am now going to step off my soapbox and move forward.

My goodness, that would turn me into a scrooge for sure! How depressing to send gifts, then find out they didn't get to the person. This world has gone to hell in a hand basket.

What a shame that a postal employee would steal from anyone and especially during the holiday season. i can understand your daughter's disappointment and your frustration as well. We also live in an apt complex and there is a dedicated delivery room for packages, in addition to a limited number of postal boxes for USPS packages. I am always concerned about thefts since the package room can be accessed by all residents with a key fob. Thankfully, there were no reports of missing or stolen packages during the holiday season. My husband and I "monitor" the package room and mark packages with the resident's apt nos.

Amazing. It is a shame that mistrust is falling in so many areas. We had a friend living in Africa. Before they went to Africa we used to send them gifts at times. They were warned about the mail there and told us to NEVER send gifts by mail, especially cards, checks or cash. Now I am hearing we too in this country are having problems. YES there was a time mail boxes were sacred along with the morals of the workers. It hurts to think different, as we age some.
Anyway I am glad you pursued along with the daughter to at least solve some of the mystery.
Sending Love from down here. And wishing you the best in health improvements.

With your receipt for the cards can't you trace the cards. Call the police or the card company. Maybe they can trace it to a postal carrier.

they were mailed first class and the usps doesn't track letters, cards if mailed first class. i wrote a scathing letter to the local post office in colorado and told them to monitor the postal carrier.

I just wrote you a very long comment and - just when I was going to post it - I accidentally UNPLUGGED my laptop and lost everything!!!!!
I don't know if I'll be able to gather my thoughts together again.

After all you've been through in 2019, I was hoping (praying) that you could begin 2020 in peace. What a shame that you and your daughter had to go through all that unnecessary crap.
I'm glad that the packages were finally discovered - but it's horrible that the cards are "missing".

Unfortunately, few people can seem to be trusted nowadays. As you said, long ago people took pride in their work. Postal workers had pride. Lately they seem to hire any trash that applies for the job.
In my humble and pessimistic opinion, society in general has gone down the toilet.

Well, I'll get off my soap box and just say that I hope you'll find blessed peace in the new year. Take care.

How sad the postal service can no longer be trusted. I've never had anything that wasn't delivered. So sorry you all had to go through that and if that courier is dishonest I hope he gets caught and punished. Hopefully in the future they'll be more honest and get your mail there. I guess you could always send it in a box and have insurance on it instead of mailing an envelope, but that does cost more. May only good things come your way in the New Year!

Well I am so sorry that happened - that is just awful. She should definitely go to the post office to discuss this. Man I love our postal gal. Sorry.

Oh man, Terre … I don't know whether to say, 'sad' or 'disgusting' … so I'm going with both. Gotta say, I suspect the apt. manager is right and that postal worker has an accomplice. If only they had a surveillance camera.

Have you thought about sharing your story with the media? This time of year, sounds like the kind of human-interest some news directors like.

The lowest of the lows who would do something like this. I "get" porch pirates, they are thieves. But these are supposed to be government employees who you hope would have more integrity. Apparently not. I hope 2020 is kinder to you and your family!

Oh, I think this had to be said, Taryterre, and you said it well. I'm so sorry your daughter didn't get her packages, especially when she's not feeling well. We had an issue with our mail this year - the whole mail box for everyone was broken into. It was an old one, and they ended up getting us a new mail box which was more secure and safe. Sometimes things happen in the world that sadden me, so Yes, it was good that you said we need to make a sincere effort and really care about each other more.

Happy New Year to my special and GRAND blog friend.

This makes me so sad and so angry! My building has a great system in place and super honest staff, but still packages get delivered to the wrong buildings. I send gift cards electronically. Would that work for you?

Sorry to hear about the trouble with the mail.

As reported by Stanford Medical, It's really the one and ONLY reason women in this country get to live 10 years longer and weigh on average 19 kilos less than us.

(And actually, it has absolutely NOTHING to do with genetics or some secret exercise and EVERYTHING about "how" they eat.)

BTW, I said "HOW", not "WHAT"...
