Halloween always delights
me. For years I’ve been dressing up and decorating to let the spirits roam
around my haunted house here on the Boulevard. We used to have
quite alot of Trick or Treaters, throughout the years. But nowadays… there are few if any. Still I'm not discouraged. I rustle through my closet and create a costume and go outside under the light of the moon… to entice
those little ghosts and goblins, to make a detour from the main road… to my side
street and STOP for some delicious chocolate treats.
Usually... the parents accompany the little tykes. And the kids get all excited to
enter the 'dark' realm of Halloween here.
I’m the only one with spotlights blazing. So... it’s a little SPOOKY. All my
neighbors keep their lights off and doors tightly closed. They won’t spring for
a bag of candy to hand out to the youngsters. And don’t want the brats coming on their
property. Makes me sad they are such scrooges. But Que Sera Sera. The little
one’s enthusiasm is contagious and I enjoy playing along with them, while they
try to stay in character. Brings a smile... and great joy, into my otherwise mundane
life. So, the decorations are hung. The candy is bought... now I must decide what mask to wear. Because these days it’s all about the
mask, isn’t it???
Do you hand out candy on Halloween??? What’s your favorite
kind? Do you buy a bag for yourself? Or
doesn’t anybody show up? What kind of costumes do they wear if they do???
Are they store bought or homemade?
Inquiring minds
want to know.
Indulge me, please.
What do you think?
Vintage pumpkin or cat???
Let the witching hours begin...

some of my most favorite memories are of Halloween trick or treating so i have always been determined to pass those memories on to others. i make treat bags stuffed with candy bars and lollipops and i pass out over 200 of them. i give them to anyone that stops by my gate. i don't care how old they are or if they are in costumes, they get a bag. my house now has a reputation for this and i always run out of candy. happy Halloween!
Definitely vintage pumpkin! That's fun for you to get festive at your house
for Halloween, Taryterre. I used to have a lot of kids coming around, but it seems to be less through the years, and living in the mountains, I don't know if we'll have any, but I AM prepared and have some Halloween candy for them if they show up. Nel is making a haunted house for the little ones this year, and that should be fun. Your spotlights sound spooky, and I'm sure the kids will love that. It reminds me to bring out the bright lantern that my brother-in-law gave me during the storm we've been having.
Happy Halloween Taryterre.
to answer your questions.....Yes, I still buy candy, but I've been nibbling on it since then haha. My brother-in-law brought over a BIG bag of candy, which I was thankful for cause they're expensive at the store. And it was
an assortment, but my favorite candy is probably Reese's peanut butter cups
or Butterfingers or Almond Joy. Love them all!
My vote goes to the vintage pumpkin head, too!
Aw, your observance does my heart good. While I've super fond memories of childhood parties, parades and trick-or-treating, that's all diminished. Heck, I'm even old enough to remember when we'd feel sorry for the kid whose parents were so unimaginative they bought him a costume. I suspect it all began with the trolls who thought it fun to poison the candy and put razor blades in apples. The way our home's situated, with empty lots beside and across the street, we've not had beggars in 3 years.
Here we don't do Trick or Treat but they are having a Trunk or Treat in the parking lot. I used to enjoy dressing up until my white sheet ghost costume scared a little one that came to the door. They I just stuck to handing out treats and avoidied wearing a costume. I hope you have a very Happy Halloween
I'm sitting here minding my own business trying to get my blog entry ready and Sherry is saying, Have you read TT? You gotta see this, etc. LOL We have a good time with your blog. Yes we do buy that bag of candy for the kids but they are fewer and fewer every year. Love the Halloween graphics. I do like the pumpkins carved by the artistic types today, some are fascinating.
Love you lady, love your enthusiasm, yep it is catching.
Sherry & jack just getting ready.....
I definitely share your enthusiasm for Halloween - - even though this year I'm completely inundated with problems and health issues. It's difficult to ignore them, although I try...
I live so far in the wilderness that trick or treaters would never find my house. I seriously doubt if ghosts or goblins would find it, either. I love Halloween candy and always buy some for my greedy self.
I like the vintage pumpkin, but definitely prefer the cat!
Oh Taryterre, you are so cute! I think it's wonderful that you have so much Halloween enthusiasm. Good for you. I'm sure you will make children happy this Halloween. I was going to skip the treats this year since I've been doing it here for 17 years. I always dress to the nines in a costume with fancy mask, dark house except for candles on the inside stairs, screeching coyote music and moans and groans playing through the window, and on and on. I just didn't feel like doing it this year but, after reading your post, maybe I will join in ! We shall see. Have a wonderful holiday. Susan
How festive and inviting your house looks for all the trick-or-treaters. I hope you get lots. Too bad your neighbors are such scrooges. Bah humbug! We used to get many years ago but now not so many. That's okay, more candy for us. We love Reese's, Snickers and Butterfingers. Happy Halloween!!!!
Vintage pumpkin.
I love all that you do. I did not turn on the lights some years. The last time I did, I took a table to the road. My porch was not fit to walk on. I put a black piece of fabric on the table, slip material. We put out candy, Osage oranges for decoration, and a candelabra. I took a picture of the candelabra and won third place in a photo contest. The candles with lit and drippy. I love the candy that is supposed to be the worst--tootsie rolls. I would prefer a Hershey bar, but can usually get my fill of Milky Way, which I love but never buy. We both dressed up, I in a black dress and lace cape with spider web fabric. He wore his Auburn sweatshirt inside out so it was just dark, navy sweat pants and black gloves and wore a mask he could see through so his face looked blank. In the dark, he looked like he was all black and blank. there was no face on the mask.
We do decorate the porch and yard with a few things, nothing spectacular--a jack o' lantern. black raven, mums, nothing scary. If I find the ghosts, he will hang them in the tree. The only reason we won't have candy for kids is because there are NO porch lights and people would also have to navigate a metal ramp. But, we are definitely in the head space of Halloween. The only candy I bought is a tiny bag of candy corn for us.
We had a cemetery in the yard made from styrofoam sheets from packing of appliances. It was really spooky.
I like how you get in the spirit.
UPDATE*** First thank you. love all your stories. thursday night from 6 to 8pm oct 28th is designated the night the youngsters beg for candy here. i opted to wear the vintage kitty mask. Candy is waiting. Was hoping for a few little ghosts and goblins Unfortunately Mother Nature decided it should rain. So it's pouring, putting a damper on the festivities. Still holding out hope???
Yeah for you, Tarryterre, in continuing to celebrate the holiday. I would have gone with the vintage kitty mask as well. In my childhood, I remember my parents buying and giving out candy but never wearing a costume which was reserved for my brother and myself. If we lived in a house we would undoubtedly be handing out treats as we used to do in NJ and VA. When we lived in VA in an old house, we would play spooky music on the stereo, light our carved pumpkins and tiki touches and sit on the front porch waiting got the trick or treaters. It was as much fun for us. Living in an apt now, is not the same (sigh).
