When my daughters were growing up.... I had a lovely 45-piece set of Spode dishes and assorted matching casserole pieces for Christmas... because back then, we entertained. If memory serves me... the design of the dishes featured a holiday tree. Underneath it were wrapped presents and a cute cuddly teddy bear. My hubby thought the set of dishes was juvenile and didn’t like them. So when the children grew up and family members passed away. I bought a cheap 16-piece set of dishes at Kmart to appease him. Cost me $50. The dinner plates were white, but the salad plates and bowls had one tiny little poinsettia on them. So, they were minimally festive. I really didn’t like them but it’s what was available on my budget, at the time. That was years ago. The old Spode dishes were carefully packed away and forgotten. However, a couple years ago, before Covid, I came across the original Spode dishes. I asked my daughters if they wanted them? My youngest prefers more modernistic, abstract items and passed on the Spode set. But my oldest is all about soft, cuddly teddy bears and loved them. Reminded her of her childhood. I thought that was sweet. So she lugged all the dishes home to her house. I told her if she wanted, she could downsize the set, keep half and sell the others, pocketing the change. This made my husband mad, 'cause he said we could have sold all of them and kept the money ourselves. Truth be told just one Spode plate is going for a pretty penny on eBay, these days. Maybe I should have listened to my husband?? Anyway, with the Kmart set also packed away and missing in action. I now had no holiday plates. Hubby said we didn’t need them. I said we did. But rather go in search of a new set of dishes, I did what I do best. I went thrifting. I found four snowman dinner plates and two salad plates. For a total of $3.99 they came home with me. A few weeks later, I found some bowls that sorta matched and purchased them too.
Since we seldom if ever have company for dinner, anymore... I just needed place settings for two, him and I. So I was all set for Christmas back then. If we did have visitors, I'd just use the everyday Corelle plates (we also have) with festive napkins, even though the combination would look mismatched. When the Pandemic hit a few years later, the Snowman dishes were still serving us well. Just the two of us. But now, as we are seemingly coming out of the darkness into the light, I wanted something different this year. Though the snowman plates are great, they are also heavy, very heavy. I have neuropathy in my hands and handling them can be a chore at times. While there are only a few, it still rains havoc on my poor hands. So… back to the thrift store I went in 2021. My hubby saw no reason to change the status quo, but I did. It took about a month, but back in September, suddenly there appeared a sweet set of Christmas dishes in Goodwill. They were the color of snow, outlined with vines of ivy and berries and a few scattered poinsettias. I instantly liked them. The dishes were delicate and manageable for my hands too. The set included four dinner plates. Four salad plates and four soup bowls. Each bundle of four cost $1.99 for a total cost of $5.97. Which more than fit my budget. Can you believe it??? I was thrilled beyond belief. I love them. And since it looks like one of our daughters… might be coming home for Christmas this year… because of a travel assignment. (first time we'll see each other in three years) We’ll all have matching plates for the BIG holiday dinner. ‘You can’t always get what you want. But if you try sometimes. You get what you need.’

Sherry likes to display seasonal items, mostly Christmas of course. I think you are the most seasonal person I know now. You are persistent and always come out the winner it seems. I think you did the right thing giving the large set to your daughter, even if she sells them.
Hoping you the best Christmas season ever when it comes around this year. We will be looking for your festivity decor.

Your plates are nice, Taryterre. So glad you found a set of four. I like the snowman ones also, but they were just too heavy to carry for you. It's wonderful that your daughter will be coming for Christmas. Isn't it funny how daughters have different tastes and styles? Nel loves old things too, and has treasures back from her childhood. She is my oldest, so she reminded me of your oldest who wanted your dishes. I didn't realize the Spode collection was worth that much these days. You always find the best deals, Taryterre, and you find what you want and need at the same time. : )

Yes, I do have Christmas that I use from 1st advent to Jan 6th
I had to give away my holiday dishes when I moved to a smaller place a few years ago now, because I had no place to store them. Now I just use my regular dishes and decorate with a Christmas table cloth and napkins. I I also had Christmas glasses and give them away, just no room for them here. But I make do with what I have. I love thrift stores and am often amazed at what you can find there at such low prices. Good for you finding what you needed. It's going to make your holidays Merry and Bright !
What a great find! Checks all your boxes! I found 4 Christmas stoneware cereal bowls at Dollar Tree last year: and last week 4 stoneware holiday plates. Nope, they don't match -- but I've heard some people do that on purpose. I believe who's around the table's more important than what's ON it. So happy your girl's coming home!
Since we always went to family at Christmas I never had any. Just used the china I got when we married for other things. The new Spode in stores is pricey. I would like it but no where to store it.
Take care, Sheila
Oh, I am a “dishaholic!” Like Chef Owings, I have special dishes that I use from the Friday after Thanksgiving until Epiphany! Great that you found dishes for your needs while thrifting!
Oh- I love your dishes and am so glad you found something you could afford that you love. I was blessed with in-laws that gave me their sets of Spode. We have a big family so I have serving for 16 people! I won't use it this year because we are going to my daughter's for the Christmas Season but I will display them in my hutch.
I think it is fun to have holiday dishes and glad you have yours. Tell your hubby I said he is "the Grinch". No better not or he will be grumpy. lol. Hugs- Diana
As a matter of fact I do have special holiday dishes, and every Thanksgiving and every Christmas I get a new pattern. I also throw in the matching napkins. Just to jazz things up. As you might've guessed, they are disposable and I just throw them out after we eat. So a new pattern every year and less dishes to wash. Win-win.
Hello dear Taryterre.....The Spode dishes are soooo beautiful. They look like a set of Nikko dishes I had for more than 40 years! Well, last year, I gave them to my daughter. Your "new" ones are very darling, too....the snowmen and the one with the vines...so pretty! Hope you have a good holiday season! Sincerely, Susan
nice article great post comment information thanks for sharing.

I had Strawberry and Vine by Wedgwood, all white with embossed design. No, not Christmas-y. But, put enough red on the table along with Christmas serving dishes and reindeer, and it is very much Christmas. I love Spode Christmas tree dishes. I am in search of Christmas china right now. You have pretty dishes.
What a wonderful post, Tarryterre, about holiday dishes. Years ago, my husband had a set with matching glasses, and these were sold them at a yard sale because of limited storage and only being used once a year and then not as often because of fewer people visiting/dining at the holidays. I recall the Spode pattern and believe it may still be around to this day as it's a classic. It's great that it has found a new home with your daughter! And, you have had some lucky thrift store finds first with the snowmen dishes and this latest find. To answer your question, we do not have any holiday dish ware but I do have drinking glasses with candy canes that are used all year and holiday wine glasses that are used at Christmas time, but stay in the wine glass holder until at least Feb.
