I’ve always
heard one way you can judge a place is by visiting their bathroom. Especially
restaurants. Usually I don’t have to go when I get there... so that impression is
often saved for later. And sometimes it’s way off base. I know a couple places
with the crummiest bathrooms, ever... but the best food. So go figure. Do you judge a
book by it’s cover? Or give a place the benefit of the doubt? Cleanliness is one thing. Decor and size is something different.

We eat at a barbeque place that has very good food and is decorated cute but when we go in the door---- The door facing has not seen a cleaning since they opened. I just want to take a bucket of soapy water and a rag and scrub. I guess I don't judge them because I keep going back.
I always try to reserve judgement about most anything and anyone but clean restrooms are appreciated for sure.
I am with MA on 'appreciating' clean bathrooms. BUT I also do not judge a place by it's bathrooms. Priorities are not the same for everyone.
BUT I am very guilty of actually judging (buying) a book because I LIKE the cover. I must catch/correct myself many times. HAving put together 12 book covers now, it is a tough call by the author. BUT I am drawn to a cover that is overall DARK or earth tones, I shy away from bright colors when shopping.
However back to the subject, there is a big difference as you alluded to in size and decor and DIRTY!
Good topic!
PS: One of my favorite things in life is cleaning the bathroom, really! So many places I am like Paula and that door. I want to ask the manager can I clean the toilet for him/her..... LOL
I will take clean over cutely decorated any day. LOL. But if you watch young workers wiping tables....most do not even know there's side on the table top..they do a couple quick swipes and gone.( so the restroom will lack in cleanings, unless the older workers do it. ) I take out my own wipes and give the table a good scrub...I know my kids call me a germ - a -phobe. But then that is where the germs stay , on the table sides, chair back, etc. LOL. Oh dear you got me started. , Sorry. Blessings, xoxo, Susie
I try to reserve judgment, but sometimes it slips in. I try to adopt the attitude "everyone is just doing the best they can with what they have to work with."

Hi Taryterre....I am very particular when it comes to cleanliness and restaurants. I won't even eat at a couple of places because I found them to be lacking in cleanliness. Checking the bathroom is almost always one of the indications of quality. If a bathroom is really filthy, it could be a reflection of what goes on in the kitchen. I mean, restaurant staff also use the restroom, you know? WOuldn't want someone who doesn't wash their hands to be handling my food. I really like to see the bathroom AND the restaurant sparkling clean. Then I feel more confident about eating there. Thanks so much for your visits. They mean a lot to me. Hope you have a super good day today. Hugs. Susan
Well, I definitely prefer Clean! Restaurants and their bathrooms. I appreciate cuteness or nice decor, but cleanliness is more important to me. And I always imagine that if the rest is clean, then the kitchen will be too. I've caught a few glimpses of kitchens through an opened door and think Yikes...hope we don't get sick! lol!
I, too, remember visiting 'joints' with dubious housekeeping ... but the BEST food! As long as there aren't cockroaches or vermin in sight, I'm good!
Food and customer service vie for first place in my book; atmosphere's a sad last. Quoting a favorite columnist waxing poetic, "I’m talking concrete-block joints with ugly bathrooms, decent service, and food served in red plastic baskets." Yes!
Well, it's always nice to have a clean bathroom at a restaurant, but I know what you mean, sometimes the best places to eat don't always have the most kept up bathrooms. Dirty bathrooms do bother me, especially when there's no wipes left in the containers. But I think I'd still eat there if the food was excellent. But one would wonder, if the bathrooms were that dirty and messy, what does that say about the establishment? Great post, Taryterre. : )

Wow - those are some fancy bathroom mirrors. That's a tough question that you asked. I don't ALWAYS judge a book by its cover, but when it comes to restaurants I do. I like them to be clean and appealing. And I think checking the kitchen would be even more important than checking the bathroom.
While I'm at it - I'd probably want to check what the chef looks like, too!
One of my favorite neighborhood places is rundown, but the food is good and the service is good and I keep coming back. Despite the need for new flooring and a coat of paint, the bathroom is immaculate. Their priorities are food and cleanliness and I can skip the fancy décor.
I tend to prefer hole in the wall places, so as long as they're clean (with a reasonably clean bathroom), I'm pretty happy. I'd much rather go to a restaurant that doesn't have much ambiance, but has great food than the other way around.
