DESSERT ANYONE?

We like pie. It's the perfect dessert. BUT I’m diabetic and can’t eat much of it during a sitting. So making a whole pie doesn't make any sense. However we’ve discovered a quick and easy way to get a small dose of that sweetness. One of our hometown fast food places sells homemade pie by the slice. At least 12 different kinds. So we opt for a small slice from there to satisfy our cravings. In February they feature CHERRY pie. A president inspired thing. And in March they highlight their chocolate flavors. I like the VERY BERRY pie that they specialize in baking. It’s my favorite.  My husband usually gets the STRAWBERRY-RHUBARB. But he also has a fondness for the APPLE BROWN BETTY. Yet.. he does something I never heard of with the apple pie. When we get home... before he eats it… he melts a piece of cheddar cheese on top. He says the cheese offsets the sweetness and gives the dessert a savory flavor. I have to admit it is pretty good... IF you can get past a strong desire for a scoop of vanilla ice cream, instead. Do any of you do this? Melt cheese on your apple pie. I've been told in some circles it’s a time honored tradition.

Oh this does indeed look delicious!! However I'm a diabetic and these types of things are forbidden for me now. But that's ok... I still enjoy the pictures. Thank you for posting. xxx

A piece of pie or any kind of dessert sounds good to me. I have a sweet tooth and love desserts! I have heard of the cheese on apple pie but never tried it. I'll have to try it out soon. Nice you have a place close to get pie by the slice.

I must agree, some cheese on an apple pie does wonders. Funny thing, I was in my 60's before I ate rhubarb pie. Loved it.

I've never ate Rhubarb in my life. I'm bad about not even tasting something that doesn't sound good. I do like cheese on Apple pie but we don't eat pie much. Like the sound of the place where you buy your pie.

I'd totally forgotten (about the cheese) ... my former hubby used to do that with his apple pie! That idea of selling pie by the slice is nothing short of genius!

My Mum (born in 1913!) used to always say "Apple pie without cheese is like a kiss without a squeeze"..so we always had cheese with our apple pie!

I love PIE too, Taryterre, but I've never heard of melting cheese over it. Like you, the berry pies are my favorite, especially blue or blackberry. I'm glad that there's a place in your town that sells pies by the slice. I have to look into that here, that would be nice. : )

I love pie! I've heard of eating cheddar cheese with apple pie (I have done it) but I've never heard of melting cheese on a pie.

Almost every time I go to Walmart, their sugar-free apple pies are marked down (I suppose they're not best-sellers). I always buy them because I honestly don't see any taste difference between them and the ones with sugar.

Oh, oh, now I'm craving something sweet and I'm diabetic too! I do treat myself once in awhile. Haven't had a piece of pie in quite a long time. I did make a sugarfree pumkin pie at Thanksgiving and it was good. Need to make another one now! :) I haven't tried cheese on an apple pie, but cheese makes everything good.

Yeah I am getting to where anything like that just tastes too sweet. Katy wanted cinnamon rolls this morning and it was way too sweet. I ate it anyway and then went for some chicken salad - to get protein going to help absorb the sugar. lol But the apple pie and ice cream does sound good to me. I have not ever had it with cheese. I think my favorite is blackberry cobbler with vanilla bean ice cream. YUM!

I've seen it from afar, and promptly scooped some more ice cream on mine. LOL!

I've heard of the cheddar on apple pie. One of my childhood friend's grandmother had a saying "Apple pie without the cheese is like a kiss without a squeeze". I tried it, but didn't really care for it. My only thing with pies is that fruit pies, except something like a coconut cream pie, have to be hot. I won't eat a cold or room temperature piece of something like apple or cherry pie.

Look into Halo Top ice cream. It's low carb and low in sugar. I don't get it often -- pricy -- but it might meet your ice cream need. I really like the vanilla.

In the South, most restaurants serve pie with cheese or ice cream or plain. I have never wanted apple pie with cheese. Plain or ice cream is my choice. I can eat pie hot from oven or cold, just as long as it is not cherry.
