What a beautifully written entry. I was chilly just reading and thrilled with the idea of seeing that sky activity. It seems that I too get let down by clouds when I decide to see one of these events. Thanks for the hint, I should have known there would be a place to see times and dates of up coming events. SWEET!
Those big skies in the mid west would be a GREAT place to see a meteor shower. And oh yes!!! we would love to see the Northern Lights!!!

It's the same here, we have a lot of cloudy skies too. I am thankful that we used to go camping in the country where we could see plenty of them. It's a gorgeous sight for sure. Nice you can remember them too. They do take out breath away !

Oh my gosh, Taryterre, I just posted this picture on a blog post August 8! It really reminded me of myself in the mountains. Sorry no starry nights for you. You know, I haven't seen the stars out in a long time either. And I've always wanted to see the Northern Lights, as you mentioned. That's nice that you are interested in Astronomy. It's such a cool thing to participate in. I can just see you going to the top of the mountain spot at Christmastime, below zero temperature, with the snow and stars wearing your Winter coats. What an incredible sight that was for you. And a beautiful memory for sure. Keep dreaming of the stars. They will appear at some point and you will have a magical moment!

Your trek to the mountain top sounds truly magical and unforgettable.
I have a very keen interest in astronomy - - and I used to be obsessed with watching the stars, phases of the moon, meteor showers, etc.

When I lived in Texas, the night sky was always clear and brilliant. Unfortunately, here in Tennessee the sky is obscured from the neighboring forest - - and the ENDLESS clouds.
It's very rare to see a clear sky here.

Unfortunately, and much to Tom's disappointment, I've never been that interested in star gazing. Your experience, however, sounds nothing short of magical!

When I was a child of about 4, we put a quilt on the front lawn and lay there, the whole family, looking up at the skies. At this point, I have seen thousands of "shooting stars." I saw them at night driving home from work or school. Tommy has never seen one.
You have not missed the stars, just the peak. This will go on all of August, I believe. So, don't try just to catch the peak activity.
I asked Tommy if he wanted to catch a plane to see the Northern Lights. Years ago, I heard that airlines have flights in the northern US just to see them. You go nowhere, just fly around and go back to where you started.

Living in a city as we now do, it's impossible to catch any meteor events (sigh). I enjoyed this post detailing your PA mountaintop trek and the display of stars, all gazillion of them! And like yourself I would also like to see the Northern Lights in my lifetime.
