WEINERMOBILE, A BLAST FROM PAST

Weekends are usually slow around here. Not much to see or do... that we haven't ALREADY seen or done. With gas prices on the rise and no income coming in, except Social Security, we've been trying to stick close to home. It's positively BORING around here. So imagine our delight when we saw this unusual vehicle hanging around the parking lot of our local grocery store.
It definitely got our attention. And caught the eye of everyone passing by. We seriously wondered how they DRIVE that thing. Needless to say, they were promoting WEINERS from Oscar Mayer. FREE coupons for all.
The truth is we haven't had a weiner to eat in years. From what we hear there is nothing NUTRITIOUS inside them. Back in the day, however... they were a regular staple of our childhood diet. Where we come from they call them frankfurters or dogs, HOTDOGS. I would smother mine in yellow mustard with pickle relish inside a BIG bun. My husband on the other hand was partial to CONEYS... made with chili, onions, mustard, ketchup and red pepper relish.
We'd get them at the ballpark, the fair, our local hangouts and at home.
Oh the memories... All this talk about WEINERS made us hungry for a couple of FOOTLONGS. And since I had never had a CONEY... I figured I'd try one, at long last. Better late, than NEVER, right? What a Blast from the Past.

When I was a child in Los Angeles, I remember seeing the original Weinermobile (that was around 100 years ago).
I still like to eat hot dogs - with plenty of mustard and onions. Or sometimes sauerkraut.

I accidentally posted my comment twice, so I deleted one of them. Sorry about that!

I'm sure there's more than one - or maybe not, LOL - but my friend's dad was an exec at Oscar Meyer in Madison, Wisconsin, and she was a regular passenger in the Weinermobile. How fun would that be??

I've seen pictures on the news of that wiener mobile traveling around, but never saw one in person before. I love hot dogs especially done on the grill in the summer time. I just read a delicious recipe for making Chili Dog Enchiladas that I'm going to try out this week. They may not be very nutritious but I'll enjoy eating them anyway! Hope your Monday is a wonderful one!

Chili Dog Enchiladas
*Chili Dog Enchiladas*
Serves 5

I don't know a child alive who doesn't love these . . . or a husband! Quick, easy and delicious.

10 corn tortillas (the smaller sized ones, about 6 inches in diameter)
10 hot dogs (If you can get the all beef ones, use them.)
1 tin (15 to 16 ouncees) of chili (I buy Stag)
2 cups of tomato salsa (I prefer the mild)
1 cup of coarsely grated cheddar cheese (4 ounces)

Preheat the oven to 180*C/350*F/ gas mark 4. Butter a 13 by 8 by 2 inch dish. Set aside.

Soften the tortillas according to the package instructions. Place one hot dog and 3 TBS of the chili on each tortilla. Roll up tortillas and place, seam sides up, in the baking dish. Spoon the salsa evenly over top, pressing the edges of the tortillas together. The salsa will help to keep the tortillas from opening during baking.

Cover with foil and bake for 20 minutes. Remove the foil and discard. Sprinkle the cheddar cheese over top. Bake for a further 5 minutes, to melt the cheese.

I have seen one of those long ago. To be honest, I still like hot dogs with mustard and onion. Now I am hungry again. Good thing it is near breakfast time.

What a fun surprise to find! We had hot dogs all the time, but now it's a rare treat. Had them a few weeks ago for the first time in ages, and they were so good.

That would make my day to see the weiner mobile. Your photo of hotdogs reminds me how delicious they are.

I will have mine with onions sauteed in Coca Cola, and topped with ketchup AND mustard!

I love hot dogs, but normally only eat them in the summer when we cook out a lot. That weiner mobile is a hoot!

I have only see the WeinerMobile on TV. I recall Consumer Reports bashing Oscar Mayers for things they found in them way back when. I love chili dogs which we get at a place called Jersey Freeze. Rob prefers "hot weinies" some New England dogs that are covered with chopped onions in like a BBQ sauce. I didn't care for them.

I don't know about you but back when I was a kid and eating hot dogs I was much thinner. See what not eating hot dogs will do to you?

Love the weiner mobile, once was behind it on the interstate. Love the all beef franks, but not "hot dogs".

I dress my hotdogs with mustard and green relish too - never ketchup. Good stuff.
